Kensington and Chelsea UNISON represents staff in all departments of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (local government) and in the Tenant Management Organisation (TMO) and other local independent organisations providing public services. We negotiate for better pay and conditions, help workers in trouble and campaign for a safer, fairer society.
UNISON is one of Britain's biggest unions, representing almost 1.3 million people across the UK's public services. It is also the biggest union in RBKC.
National pay strike, 16-17 July
Hundreds of RBKC Unison members took strike action last month in protest against the derisory 2.45% pay offer. Union members held picket lines at Kensington Town Hall, Westway, Chelsea Old Town Hall and other council and TMO offices. Three new members signed up on the picket line at Westway and there were many more new members across the borough. A delegation from the picket lines went to join the demonstration and rally in central London with our new branch banner. The strike action received sympathetic news coverage around the country and clearly made an impact as the employers agreed to resume negotiations shortly afterwards. Unison and Unite negotiators will now meet with the employers. Please check the Unison website for the latest news on the negotiations.
Representing our members
Unison shop stewards and health-and-safety reps have been representing individual members with a range of problems this month, including long-term sickness, pay progression, health and safety and bullying problems. Shop stewards are ordinary workers like you, who volunteer to represent their fellow members. Extensive training and agreed time off is available for shop stewards. There's no substitute for the local knowledge and experience a shop steward can bring, so we really need one rep in every team. Could you represent your team? Call the Unison office for details.
